Why Wedding Photographers Don’t Provide RAW Files
(And Why You Would Not Want Them Anyway!)
When you book a wedding photographer, you’re not just hiring someone to click a button. You’re investing in an artist, storyteller and expert who will capture and present your most cherished moments in the best way possible. But sometimes, couples ask if they can have the RAW files—the unedited, unpolished photos straight from the camera.
While it’s a fair question, the answer from most professional photographers, including us at Ever After Photographers, is no. Let’s dive into why having RAW files as your final product isn’t ideal and why good wedding photographers don’t provide them.
What Are RAW Files?
Understanding what RAW files are may change your mind about wanting them. Think of RAW files as the unbaked ingredients for a wedding cake. They’re large, unprocessed files straight from the camera. RAW files capture all the image data, which is fantastic for editing but not ideal for sharing or printing. They appear flat and lack the vibrant colours, contrast, and polish you associate with a professional photo. What you receive is a polished gallery of high-resolution JPEG images that are ready to enjoy, print, and share.
While we shoot in RAW, we don’t deliver RAW files because they’re not the finished product. RAW files are the foundation we build on during the editing process.

Why Aren’t RAW Files the Final Product?
They’re Unfinished
RAW files are just the starting point of the creative process. Professional photographers carefully edit each image to adjust exposure, colors, contrast, and composition. This editing transforms a good photo into something extraordinary, matching the photographer’s unique style and vision.
When you book a wedding photographer, you agree to receive a final product that meets their artistic standards. To ensure you love the results, many photographers, including us, provide access to full wedding galleries before booking. This allows you to see our editing style and trust the process.
They’re Technically Challenging
RAW files require specialized software like Adobe Lightroom or Photoshop to open and view. They’re not ready-to-go JPEGs you can easily print or share with family and friends. Without the proper tools and skills, RAW files won’t look like the stunning photos you expect.
Additionally, photographers take thousands of images during an 8-hour wedding day, creating an unedited gallery that can range from 100GB to 500GB. Storing and sharing these files can be overwhelming. And let’s be honest—between lighting changes and technical adjustments, not every shot is flattering or meaningful. Trust us, you wouldn’t want these unpolished images as part of your wedding gallery.

They Don’t Reflect the Photographer’s Brand
A photographer’s reputation is built on their finished work, not the unedited images. Sharing RAW files is like showing an incomplete draft of a novel or an unedited movie—it doesn’t represent the full vision or quality photographers strive to deliver.
Hiring a wedding photographer is an investment. It’s important to trust their expertise, creative vision, and ability to deliver a gallery that reflects your unique day beautifully.
They’re Massive in Size
RAW files are enormous—sometimes ten times larger than a JPEG. Managing these files can be impractical for most couples, especially if you’re trying to store or share them. Would you really want a gallery that takes up 300GB of space? Instead, we provide high-resolution JPEGs that are optimized for both quality and ease of use.
Why Don’t Good Photographers Provide RAW Files?
Good photographers prioritize quality and consistency. Handing over unedited RAW files means losing control over the final product and how their work is perceived. It’s like a chef handing you raw ingredients instead of a beautifully plated dish—neither party is satisfied.
The editing process is where much of the magic happens. It’s how photographers bring their unique style to life and ensure your photos tell a cohesive, meaningful story. Skipping this step by providing RAW files would result in an inconsistent and unfinished look.
